Hi guys,

Has anyone tried to change the exhaust system of this variant of the Fortuner? Does anyone have any idea who has an aftermarket upgrade?

You can use the one from the 3.0 engine no problem, it is not too big at all, so dont worry about that.

Just have a better down pipe made from the turbo to the system to have a better complete easier flowing exhaust system.

Then you can feel the extra power and run a few extra psi boost Twisted Evil

bryboy what's the downpipe size you installed and how much is the damage?

from the looks of it, only the muffler is stainless steel then the rest is ordinary pipe, correct me if im wrong thanks .

Guys, when i was saying about the downpipe mod, i was meaning from the turbo down to the system.

If you look at the last picture, you can see how flow restrictive the pipe is coming out the turbo, its at a 90 deg bend, which is horrible for flow and causes higher egts as the gas cant get out quick enough.

If you are planning any exhaust mods at all, start with from the turbo back to see the better improvements, lower egts and a few more psi boost.

@bryboy, how is the system now pare, any better now that you have used it a little more???
Sorry i never got the chance to see it the other night.

hi guys...

drove the car out last night going tagaytay... another impulsive decision! haha pedal to the metal...

to answer your queries...

purchased this from mufflerland

the pipping used is made from aluminum... not ordinary black iron... so it kinda cost a tad more (no stainless for the 2.3/8th pipe that i installed)...yup the freeflow muff is stainless

pipes cost me 5K
3in. stainless muff 7K
* a 3in. pipe of same length would cost me 9.5K

i noticed a deep tone noise... still far from a skyrocket or a 6x6 truck of the military hehe..

broburg: it would be best if you get a complete 3in. system... you could probably check out andys or sshhh system(he has the 3in. thailand made-he lives near your office lang)

of course... to answer the ultimate question...did it add any power???
-yeah, turbo lag is the same... but once the boost kicks in...zooooomm... based on my BUTT dyno... i gained atleast 5-10hp this is my GUESestimate.. shifting has improved... maybe because i lost a lot of restriction in the pipes...
diameter of the pipe i replaced was only 2in. (was probably to serve as the backpressure??)

now for my next project.. from the turbo... actually i was suppose to touch that as well... but due to time constraints and their lack of the new 3in. stainless pipe i wasnt able to do so... the boys in muffland were quite hesitant to increase the diameter of my pipe on the turbo because i only had a 2.5...

andy:
maybe you can help explain this... since the upgrade i notice that the maximum speed per gear increased... i wonder how that happened... noticed this last night specially on the 3rd gear... i only used to top out at 120kph on my 3rd gear but now i could do 140kph. wtf???? and well my topspeed didn't really change... i could effortlessly hit 140-150kph but could barely hit 160kph... maybe because im fulltank? haha

* Btw guys, im testing my consumption now... will give you an update...although i really pushed my fort the whole time last night...im glad to say the needle just moved a bit... =)

this will lead me to opening a new topic so that it won't be OT (topspeed of a 2.5)

will keep this short Laughing

you have reduced the back pressure, so the engine is working less to create the same power. You are making more power at the same rpms as from before, hence you are gaining more free revs.

Due to this you will gain a little more speed from each gear.

You should also have slightly improved fuel consumption.

Once you change the downpipe, you should notice a little less lag.

The easiest way to see how this works overall is to think of an exhaust brake system, which when closed allows for super engine braking but very little speed due to the restriction in the exhaust, so when the flap opens its free and allows the gases to escape faster, thus more free engine speed.

If you tell me now that your fuel consumption is worse then i will guess thats down to you keeping the foot harder on the gas pedal these days Twisted Evil

Hi andy...

I think im running on 320kms on half tank? ill try to take a picture later... i can say that ive been flooring the car 70-80% of the time when i take him out! hahaha based on obc (range) im only gonna do 540kms... lets see lets see...

i hope this give me better fuel mileage...because based on my other exhaust upgrades on gasoline powered cars, efficiency is nowhere to be found! hahaha

bry i envy you 540km !!!! on a tank of diesel thats insane , on my 3 liter diesel i can only get 400 km city driving thats super tipid driving, i wish i could get that kind of efficiency bro good for you pare.

@bryboy, ha ha thought you had been hitting the gas harder, but remember on the diesel you cant rev to 8000rpms as you did on your gas cars, but good going on your fuel consumption Twisted Evil

@broburg, pare i am sure you consumption will improve as your engine loosens up at little Rolling Eyes

For me i get around the 400kms mark when there is 1/4 remaining in the tank as thats when i usually refill.
I have found the first 1/4 of the gauge is slow, as i have gotten over 150kms on this level.
This is with my usuall style of driving and lots of city idling Crying or Very sad

hi broburg... the only best thing i can think of when comparing a 2.5 from a 3.0? hahaha

andy: wifey has been riding with me during those little times i don't get to speed! haha she knows im on a mission...

here's a pic i took earlier before leaving the office... birds eyeview, the needle is actually covering most the halfway mark from my view...
